What is the CDT?

Vicki and Rainman's online journal

10/2 We hiked back into Steamboat Springs, Co. and have finished hiking the CDT. On the way we detoured into Saratoga Springs, Wy. to enjoy a soak in the natural hot springs, it felt great, the night before we received several inches of snow. We incounted again hundreds of antelope through out the desert, the coyotes were singing again. Mule deer are roaming and there are still large robins flying around. Our hike along the Encampment River, on the Encampment trail was another beautiful walk. We hiked along the Oregeon trail, California trail, Morman trail and on the pony express route, lots of history. On our last night out we recieved lots of wet, heavy snow. Beautiful yes but cold. We are now back in Denver saying goodbye to Pieps & Bekha, Buns & Michele and Namie & Hiker Heidi. Thank you to all of you for the support throughout the hike, and all of the special goodies, your the best. We'll be leaving for the east the beginning of next week (10-7 or so). first stop Tennessee, then North so watch for us.
9/23 Happy B-day Mark. The Bridger-Tetons Wilderness was breathtaking. It has been perfect hiking weather. Fall is upon us, the colors are bright. Again we walked past swam in, and hung out at numerous lakes and rivers.  Rainman was fishing at "Bobs" Lake. We walked around Mt. Bonneville, a spectular site most of the day then on into The Cirquite of the Towers, we camped under them, nice. After a fun stay at Alantic City, population 57/16 in the winter, we left the wilderness and entered The Red Desert, The Great Divide Basin. We came upon hundreds of sheep crossing in front of us, great footage. We jumped a 3 ft. Jack Rabbit, out here they call him a jack-a-lope, they are huge. While setting up camp at Morman Spring a flock of grouse flew in just above our heads for a drink of water. We listened to the coyotes sing all night. Antelope are everywhere, they are so timid, ran away from anything. We watched Eagles and Hawks fly over head. Our last day in the desert brought us up on 15-20 wild horses, the stallion was off like a flash, 3 stayed by to watch us. We are now in Rawlins Wy. Yippy has to catch a plane back to Alaska in the morning. We had a great hike with him. Thank you Yippy. We leave tomorrow for Encampment, we're thinking of taking a day to soak in the hobo hot springs and camp by the springs once we are there. Then comes the final week to Steamboat Springs Co. where Rainman will be the latest Triple Crowner, Excellent. come celebrate with us! Sorry we (again) were unable to put the latest photos on the site for you to see but will make up for it when the CDT journey is completed. So only around 160 miles left, a couple more weeks. We should be back on the east coast by the end of October, hopefully to see the New England fall colors. Happy fall to all..............................
9/12 We hiked through Yellowstone, past the Tetons and into The Winds and the wind river/green river and lakes area. How can things keep getting more and more beautiful? We camped nightly by the waters edge. The mornings this last week have been around 25 degrees, alittle chilly, but great hiking weather. Fall is beginning to showits colors here in Wy. another beautiful state. We have incounted moose on a daily basis, Bulls with the cows and the cows with their young. Yippy saw 2 black bear entering the meadows. It is hunting season here and the Elk have been running, their racks are a site to see. We watched and filmd an owl, she wasn't happy with Yippy being around her area. Our hike is fast coming to a close but the memories will last a life time, thanx for following our journey, we are off to finish seeing The Winds, next stop, South Pass City Wy, then Rawlins, Encampment and on to end the hike at Steamboat Springs Co. tell then see you on the web.
8/23 Boo Hoo we are just about to finish up with Montana and Idaho. Our next stop takes us to Yellowstone National Park where we will meet up and hike with Yippy from Alaska...this will be fun. We meet up again with the north bounders in Leadore Idaho, it was great to hang with Slip Kid and to be with Snappy and Puff Puff again! The wildlife again has been everywhere. We saw herds of Elk, Antelope, Wolfs and Sheep. The T-storms are loud bouncing off the mountains. While camping in Red Rock Lakes Refugee we meet a group of trail workers and the Ranger, they invited us to join them for chips/salsa, wine, homemade chili, corn bread & butter and carrot cake with cream cheese frosting, then dark chocolates and reese cups and more wine. too much fun, boy did we feast!!! THANK YOU! The sites are beautiful and the smoke is gone. Just a few more weeks left, abt. 500 more miles, can't wait to see everyone again until then keep us with you. See you soon.
8/14 Hi, we are in Leadore Idaho, with a population of 90 including the animals!  We left Salmon ID for Chief Joseph Pass and was picked up by Ted & Stephanie from Washington, turned out they were hiking the same trail, The Big Hole segment, so we hiked together. The trail with all of the alpine lakes and creeks that follows the Idaho-Montana boundary through the Beaverhead Mountains was breathtaking. We stopped early one day (4:20) to "pan for gold" pretty cool but back breaking work. We again jumped herds of Elk, mule deer, mountain goats and mountain sheep. The birds are all starting to sing again, maybe the fires are slowing down. The trail crossed the 45th Parallel, halfway between North Pole and Equator. At Lemhi Pass  we happened to be at the same spot as Meriweather, the guide for Lewis & Clark, the head waters of the Missouri River in August 12, 1805, we were here 8/12/2007. From Lemhi Pass to Bannock Pass one afternoon we followed Mountain Lion tracks and scat for miles. There have been lots of bear scat and turned over rocks, but so far we have only seen a cub, he didn't see us until he was about 30 ft. away, where was mom we all wondered?? but he soon turned back. We are staying at the Leadore Inn better known as "The White House". While sitting out side the cottage Slip Kid walked in, he's staying here for the evening also. To all of the other CDT hikers make sure you visit Diane and Dan in Leadore ID at The Velvet Elk resturant, free milkshakes, hiker box, hospitality and great food. We head tomorrow for Lima so until then everyone keep smiling!
8/6 Happy birthday dad! Montana is so beautiful, just a little smokey due to the numerous fires burning in the areas. Ramblin has been such a great support for us Thank you...he meet us with Iced teas, sandwiches, frosty cold ones, hot dogs you name it he did it. We all meet up with Li from the grand canyon and again met up with Humble & Modest, they are almost at the end of their journey. While re-supplying in Anaconda, we met up at the same hotel with Walkin Jim, he's hiking to Marysville, MT. hopefully we'll see him at the gathering in October. After a nice BBQ on Ramblins new grill we all hiked The Anaconda-Pintler Wilderness to Flower lake where we watched a young buck, well lets say he watched us while we packed up then he followed us up the trail for 1/4 mile, we hiked passed, swam in and camped by at least 10 different lakes. After hiking to Warren Lake and getting his butt kicked in Rummy 500, Ramblin is off for a Seattle/Red Sox game then on to visit Canada, we'll meet up again in Yellowstone next month. We jumped so many deer & Elk, watched another eagle and plenty of hawks, the best was a male & female hawk teaching their young how to fly. Our last night/early morning out at Chief Joseph Pass, MT. the wolfs were singing out for hours. After a nice visit in Salmon, Idaho we will be back on the trail heading to Leadore and Lima, Macks Inn then Yellowstone!! Hopefully by then we will be able to put more pictures/videos on the site, wish us luck!
7/25 We left Denver for Canada the 11th, we met up with Ramblin Rich and hiked through Glacier National Park, Mt. and on into Helena, MT. After acquiring our permits we hiked into Belly River ranger station where we had to change our permits due to trail closure through Ptarmigan tunnel as there were 7 grizzlies hanging around. Our camp spot the 3rd night was closed because of grizzly, rangers were monitoring their activities, we  ended up camping at Red Eagle Lake, watching the Loons and being woken by their sounds in the am. We watched a moose wading in the pond in the early morning, she didn't seem to have a care in the world. Rams, Marmots and Big Horn-sheep are everywhere. A Golden Eagle kept flying around us while we were climbing over Pass. Except for the high heat, the walk in Glacier is breathtaking, so much to see, we walked past and hung out at at least 20 different waterfalls, many over 1000 feet. The flowers are all in bloom and every color. Our last day out of the park we followed grizzly track for at least 5 miles, never saw him "(, we tried. The 3 of us are in Helena, Mt until tomorrow, unfortunately we will not be able to hike through The Bob Marshal Wilderness as it is burning over 7000 acres, everyone was evacuated from the area, all but our package we sent to Benchmark. Our next adventure will be Anaconda, maybe we'll meet up with Sly around there. All for now, happy summer, and say Happy birthday to my dad for me! Miss you all xo.
7/10 What a fun 4th we all head! Namie, Heidi, Buns, Michele, Rob, Christine, Rainman & Vicki. Thanx Pete for the great music and hospitality. We can't say thank you enough to Buns & Michele for being there and helping us in every way. Unfortunately we had to get off the trail for a while because Vicki injured her hand, she's okay, just a little sore but ready to hit the trail again. After meeting up with Ramblin Rich in Butte, Montana on the 12th, the 3 of us will head to E. Glacier, Mt. and start hiking south back to Steamboat, Co. this way we can finish the journey in the desert late September instead of the mountains....weather.... so from now on follow the trip itinerary from E. Glacier, Mt. UP to Steamboat, Co., just a little flip. Until next time enjoy your summer as much as we are!     P.S. Heidi, thanx for the "DJEEP".
7/2 Happy 4th, We hiked into Grand Lake friday. We've walked up on herds of Elk, sheep, deer, moose, marmots, porcupine, we watched pelicans, geese & osprey with there young. The scent & colors from the array of flowers have been outstanding, along with Colorado's afternoon lightning storms, they are something to remember. Buns and Michele picked us up in Grand Lake and we are all meeting up with Namie & Heidi in Boulder where we'll hang with Pete and The Wayward Sons in Gold City listening to music and watching fire works. We've added 2 new CDT videos along with more pictures of Colorado and updated some web pages, hope you've all been enjoying our journey as much as we have. Again, Happy 4th of July.
6/25  Happy Summer, we hiked on into Silverthorne, Co our adventure this trip took us through some of the most scenic wilderness, still some snow because of the higher elevation we hike in Colorado, but no need for snowshoes. We had some cold river crossings to ford through. The trail lead us to the highest mountains in Co., Mt. Albert and Mt. Massive, to get there we hiked past  Pear Lake, through Hope Pass, the steepest climb on the CDT. We walked into the town Twin Lakes then into Leadville, Co. We all stayed in The Leadville Hostel for Vicki's B-day, what a great place, Wild Bill and Cathy, the hostel hosts, had an AUCE pork BBQ, yummy. The ride to the Rockies was going on so the town was busy. Puff and Syd came and picked us up the next night to stay with them in Minturn, CO. because there were no rooms left in town. The next time we update the journal/pictures will probable be the 4th of July, so enjoy your summer for now, we are!
6/15 Yeah Whoo what an adventure we are having...snow for the beginning and end of this weeks travels. Lots of elevation change 100 ft. up to go 100 feet down. We met and have been hiking all week with Puff Puff and Snappy, two cool people. Vicki's brother Ryan, Kim, Joseph & Trinity stopped by while we were at Marshall Pass, bringing us Pizza, beer and a birthday cake for Bekahs B-day, what a sweet trail treat.  Many thanx Ry!!!! Jackson, Pieps and Bekah's dog jumped off a snow edge, thinking it was just snow...down he went about 300 feet, it was not so easy for him to climb back out, hes fine but what a ride. We wanted to say a huge Thank you to Hiker Heidi and Namie for "putting up with us", and Buns for always being there!!!  We are in Salida Co. for the evening, we'll be off for the park for a concert tonight, Salida is hopping this weekend with a bluegrass festival and white water events. Hope all is well with all of you...miss everyone but someones gotta do it. tell next time keep smiling.....
6/8  We are back in Pagosa, soaking in the hot springs. Pieps, Bekah, Jackson, Sly, Rainman and Vicki just hiked through the South San Juan Wilderness. We used our snowshoes everyday taking 12 hours to hike 10 miles due to the post holing, even with the shoes on, icy edges and climbs and sledding adventures. Took great footage of all of us clascading over the walls...fun but wet butts. We met up with Jim, Mark, Trey, Arteria, and Crazy Horse on the trail. Our last night out we stayed in a hunting/fishing resort/camp in Platora, Co with Crazy Horse and Trey. Beautiful, peaceful area, friendly, helpful people, Steve one of the employees gave us a ride to Charma the next day, then we headed to Pagosa. While in the San Juan's we watched a baby Elk try to stand, he was a little wobbly but he made it, passed by plenty of bear tracks and watched deer roam. The Marmots were curious but stayed away. Rainman, Vicki, Pieps, Bekah and Jackson leave tomorrow (saturday) for Creede to hike through to Salida, Co. by next weekend, hopefully hooking up with Vicki's brother Ryan while he and his family are in Colorado for a wedding, and Buns and Michele. Sly will be heading north to hike south. So we will be back in the snow, is it June or December? Life on the CDT.
5/29  Happy Memorial Day. We just finished NM at around 342 miles and are soaking in the hot springs at Pagosa Springs Co. until the 1st of June while waiting for Pieps and Bekah to join us. But in the mean time we have met some of the best people, we are staying at Namie and Hiker Heidis Hostel in Pagosa, great place with a fire pit outside, we even had fireworks the other night. Memorial Day we went to Kips to hear Pete from The Wayward Sons play, excellent music, they were to play from 3 until 6pm but played until 10pm because we, the band included was having so much fun. While there we met Kevin who has a rafting company and is taking us all out for a river run thursday...Life Is Good!!! The CDT hike has lead us to the best places, NM was beautiful and lucky for us is a wet year so everything is bright green and blooming instead of the brown that is typical for this time of year. We've had some interesting river crossings because the water is so high, the wildlife is active up in the high country, jumped two coyotes the other morning and plenty of Elk and Deer, the snow has been thick in spots so Co will be nice, we'll get a chance to use our snowshoes. So far we have met 6 other thru-hikers on the CDT. So as you can see we are living life the way it should be, just wish everyone could experience this.
We miss everyone and hope all is well. until next time, Colorado here we come.
5/19 Hi all.  While staying in Cuba NM last week we went to El Brunos Resturant for a margarita, while there a lady asked us where we were hiking to, when we told her she stood up and asked for every ones attention and announced we were hiking the CDT, everyone clapped with excitement. We are now at Ghost Ranch in Abiqui NM. beautiful/friendly place. (Just finished an all you can eat lunch, Dinner starts at 5:30!) We'll be here until monday am. We wanted to say a very special thank you to Tom Bombadil for being our Trail Angel and helping us out with the food drop! you are a very special person Tom. Our journey has been different everyday, what will the rest bring? We have gone from 90's in the desert to post holing in the snow at Mt Taylor and San Pedro Parks Wilderness and San Pedro Peaks. such beautiful country. New Mexico is having their monsoon season now instead of July. Every afternoon the clouds roll in and the T-storms have been wild,  everyday we have made it in the tent JUST before, yeah. The coyotes, owls and Elk like waking us, just to let us know they are there. Friday we had 16 river crossings then crossed the "skull" bridge over the Charma River, with all of the rain it is at least class III rapids. we though about riding our therma rest for fun except Rainman and Slys have holes in them, they have a contest to see whos therma rest goes flat first in the evening. The rivers look like chocolate milk with all of the soot. So the next time you'll hear from us will be in Charma NM, where Pieps and Bekah will be joining us. Buns and Michele will drop them off and we will all enjoy ourselfs before we begin the mountains of Colorado. Tell then...Happy Trails from all of us...OH PS. would be great to have some homemade goodies :) Thanx...
5/14 Happy Mothers Day! Wow what a great adventure we are on. We just completed 200 miles. New Mexico has been beautiful..the desert is a little hot, to be expected. Good stories to tell. Saturday while heading to the to of the mesa in the middle of the trail was a granddaddy rattlesnake and he wasn't moving, and let us know he was not happy with our visit to his country, he lifted his head high and rattled like crazy. pictures to follow in a week or so.
5/5  The CDT is on and we've already hiked our first 100 miles. We left Co for NM saturday where we (Rainman, Vicki, Bekah, Pieps, & Sly) all met Nita "The Pie Lady"and her husband Don, excellent people, Nita had so many kinds of pie, of course we all pigged out. Heidi & Namie drove down to also see us off. After a fun night with our hosts we all spent the night at their hostel in Pie-Town. The hike began sunday 4/29 at mile marker 0. After walking a few yards a ranchers dog started following/herding us. She stayed with us for about 12 miles, we nicknamed her "Pie". It was getting towards the end of our day & we decided to try to get ahold of Nita to let the rancher know where "Pie" was when two cars came up on us. It was Namie & Heidi with a bag of cold beer and Nita with more of her fantastic pie. What a great ending for the first day. Nita Thank you for the warm send off.  We hiked through Sand and Cebolla Canyon, The Zuni-Acoma trail, Bonita Canyon.  The cactus are all beginning to bloom, more and more every day, beautiful sights out here. We are now in Grants NM. Tomorrow we'll be heading up Mt. Taylor the highest point in NM. 11,301' there is still  snow on top. Our next stop, Cuba, NM. about 7.2 days away. Miss everyone, would love to hear from you. We are really enjoying hiking "The Divide".
4/20 Hello, we hope everyone is enjoying spring...I know, I know, winter just will not go away, but its CDT time! Our time in Colorado has been exciting, biking, hiking, mapping, visiting Coors, best of all spending time with Pieps and Bekha, thank you guys! Last weekend was spent with Buns, Rob, Vicki, Dave and others at Copper Mt. watching Spearhead on saturday and Dark Star Orchestra on sunday, thanx to everyone for such a good time. After house/dog sitting for Buns and Michele in Colorado Springs we are off to Pie town NM. to meet Nita "the pie lady" and her husband, Nita is graciously baking us a 'send off" pie. From here begins the CDT, leaving Pie town NM. sunday the 29th for Grants NM. from there to Cuba NM. and on to Ghost Ranch in Abiquiu, NM. after Ghost Ranch we will head to Chama NM. where Pieps, Bekah and Jackson will join us on the trail for June and July hiking through all of Colorado and most of Montana. This is Piep's 3rd time on the CDT. Our first town together will be Pagosa Springs Co. where we will meet up with Namie & Heidi and enjoy some Hot Springs, then off to Creede then into Salida where Buns, Michele and Rob will join all of us for a few days of fun. Sounds like there will be a few friends meeting us along the CDT, the more the merrier, so the next time you hear from us we will be well into the CONTINENTIAL DIVIDE.
3/24 We are back with Pieps & Bekah in Colorado planning the final stages. Huge Thanks to Slo-ride and Lori for putting up with us. After leaving the 90's of Tuscon AZ. we visited The Gila Hot Springs and Cliff Dwellings for some relaxation. The weather here in Co. is nice, we'll be hiking to the Coors Brewery, Mountain biking around and snowshoeing the high country, probable doing some weekend hikes, maybe even hit The Hot Springs of Colorado. To Ramblin Rich, my personal trainer, Thank you, thank you, thank you. Until next time, keep us on your favorites, we've added video, and changed some of the pages.
3/17 We've just finished another 100 miles on the AZT. The first day we hiked to Mt Mica which was like climbing 2 1/2 Mt. Chocoruas heading for Mt Lemmon at 9000 feet. It is beautiful up here, Douglas Furs and Ponderosa Pines, even snow to play in. The weather has been in the 90's in Tuscon, 80's in the Mts. During the hot afternoons we have been hanging along streams, swimming etc. then hiking later in the day. Perfect sleeping weather, stars etc. Spring is here, the birds are coming back and plenty of nature activity. We had a "wild kingdom" experience while at "The Lake" with the ducks and a hawk, and a visit one night from the Ring-tailed cats. We saw a garden snake, plenty of small lizards and a few horn-toad lizards. We are leaving monday for New Mexico on a Hot Springs tour, then back to Denver with Pieps and Bekah. Until next time, Happy Spring to all.
3/3 Just completed 100 miles on The Arizona Trail. Beautiful weather, blue skies, and moon/star filled nights. Excellent sunrises and sunsets. 70's with a breeze. Woke one morning to 19 degrees, but that changed quick. Again each morning we were woken by Owls and birds. We jumped a Bobcat, what a thrill that was. We also scared a couple of groups of Javelinas, made their hair stand up on their backs. Saw herds of mule deer, a granddaddy Buck, grouse, rabbits, a marmot, geckos, small lizard, a scorpion and Hawks, a couple hawks were flying around us doing a mating dance. We are back in Tuscon with Slo-Ride and Lori until the end of the week when Ramblin Rich comes down with all of us to hike 140 miles on and around Mt. Lemmon and the AZT. Not to tease all of you but this week is going to be in the 80's, oh the life of a hiker!!!! some body's gotta do it. love to all. Until next time. Happy Trails.
